3 GENERATORS
Gantry, Transport, Jack & Slide – Hays, KS
TCR offloaded three 152-ton generators using our 400-ton gantries at a railyard in Hays, KS. TCR then transported, maneuvered and set each generator on its foundation according to precise specifications.
The transportation of each generator along a 6.5-mile route from the rail yard to the energy company included traversing an overpass over I-70.
To safely cross the overpass, KDOT required the use of a 12-line trailer with a drop-deck and wing dollies.
Once in the plant, the generators were maneuvered to their building using a self-propelled 10-line trailer and moved inside with precision to be moved to their final resting location using our jack & slide system.
The project was completed on time with no injuries and to the satisfaction of the client who stated, “I was quite pleased with Taylor Crane. They were very safety-conscious and professional in their approach to their work.”

MOVE
Bartlesville, OK
The No. 940
locomotive is the sole survivor of 342 similar steam engines built for the Santa Fe. It was retired in 1954 and was moved to Bartlesville for display. On December 9th, 2009, this 100+ year old locomotive was rescued from further deterioration due to the Caney River flooding at her then current location. It was placed in its new home at the Bartlesville Depot in honor of the depot’s 100th birthday.
This unusual move was coordinated by SMC of Bartlesville and Taylor Crane & Rigging who provided a small army of men and an array of massive equipment to handle the move. Steam locomotive moves such as this occur only a few times each decade in the United States.
Practice Lift
The No. 940 locomotive was rigged with a 265 ton and 120 ton crane. TCR performed the test lift in order to assure everything was in place and to get the weight of the locomotive, which determined to be 275,000 lbs.
Move of Locomotive
TCR lifted and loaded the locomotive onto a 8 axel, 64 tire scheuerle trailer and pushed tender to cranes and rigged and loaded tender (110,000 lbs) on to a 4 axel lowboy. TCR then moved the locomotive 4 blocks from Johnstone Park to the Bartlesville Depot. The locomotive was set into position over tracks and cranes offloaded it. TCR then backed tender in over tracks and offloaded the No. 940.
Reinstall
GEAR BOX
Joplin, MO
Supplied manpower and equipment to:
- Pull gear box and change out roll
- Transport gear box from Coffeyville to Kansas City, MO
- Reinstall gear box (3,500 lbs)
Transformer
RELOCATION
80 Mile Transport to Malta Bend, MO
Kansas City Power & Light hired Taylor to relocate a 196K lb. transformer approximately 80 miles in MO. The transformer, which was located at the former GST Steel Complex, was needed for the new plant under construction at Malta Bend, MO.
KCP&L was unable to find a local company to perform the move which due to the size and weight required specialized equipment.
Taylor utilized its jacking equipment for the lifting, loading, and setting work, and subcontracted the road transportation of the work, which required a dual lane steerable beam system.
Due to overhead bridge clearance restrictions the transportation required suspending and carrying the transformer from the sides.
The task required design and engineering of horizontal transfer beams and lifting gear, which Taylor fabricated and painted blue at its headquarters/shop in Coffeyville, KS.
50 Truckloads
CROSSING BORDER
Johnson Controls – Monterrey, Mexico to
Norman, OK / Wichita, KS
Dismantle, load, transport, offload and reinstall entire plant from Mexico to Norman, OK and Wichita, KS. Machinery included: presses, shears, assembly lines, ovens, and more. Project required extensive planning and communication with border authorities and was finished ahead of the one-month timeline.

SUPERLOAD MOVE
Sega – Columbus, Kansas
Sega Inc. and Empire District Electric Co approached Taylor Crane & Rigging in January of 2006 with a challenging move: A 300 ton generator and a 250 ton turbine needed to be relocated from a rail site to their new foundation.
The original plan of work was simple and straight forward; however, a couple problems evolved during the project. First, the original rail delivery spur, only three miles from the Empire’s construction site, was discovered to be insufficient to handle delivery of the heavy rail car loads. The best alternative plan was to build a costly new rail spur in Columbus, KS eighteen miles from the site. However, the new route also included a major obstacle, crossing a 15 ton capacity county bridge. The second problem concerned access to the equipments’ new foundations. Construction issues required access from the side of the foundation instead of the ends as originally planned. This required jacking and lifting the turbine and generator from the ends, which would require a longer and substantially stronger lifting beam than TCR had in its arsenal. With some quick thinking, Taylor realized both problems could be solved with some modification and fabrication to a trailer deck in its fleet.
The trailer deck, if extended, could be used as a “bridge jumper” to cross the bridge. The deck could also be modified to be used as a lifting beam to solve the foundation access problem.
Sega and Empire awarded the project to TCR with only six weeks to prepare for the job. Preparation included design, structural engineering, fabrication, and installation of the mobile ‘bridge jumper’. Also, matting and widening several county road intersections, cribbing several box culverts, leasing a heavy haul modular hydraulic transport unit, and permitting with state and county entities. Taylor was liable for any problems or structural damage to the county’s bridge and roads and the state’s highway.
The job went as planned, without incident or injury and to everyone’s complete satisfaction, especially the clients Sega and Empire.
The Kansas Dept of Transportation determined that the super load movement of the generator, with a gross weight of 788,590 pounds on 19 axles, was the heaviest load ever moved on county and state roads in Kansas to date.
